Russelia equisetiformis, commonly known as Firecracker plant, Coral plant, Coralblow and Fountain plant, is a native of Tropical America and Mexico. They grow 3 feet or more with a spread of 2-3 feet. The tiny, dark green leaves are scale-like and grow on thin, rush-like stems bearing 1 to 2 inch long tubular flowers, and cascade out 3 feet or more making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets and patio tubs. The plant flowers abundantly between March and December, these flowers are heavy with nectar which is incredibly sweet and can be sucked out of the back of the tube of the flower. Delicious, I love it.
The Coral Plant needs a well-drained potting mix or humus rich soil, generally a 50/50 mix of John Innes No2 with ericaceous compost and a little added grit for good drainage.. Let the soil become moderately dry between thorough waterings and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 2 weeks year around.
