About Us
Welcome to The Old Walled Garden, home of the largest commercial collection of Tropical Hibiscus in Britain, the largest collection of Callistemon in Britain and home to a lot of other lovely plants too.
The Old Walled Garden was established in a beautiful Edwardian walled garden in Kent, where for the better part of 20 years my father John Angrave and me (Heather) collected and grew unusual shrubs and climbers that we liked and couldn't find in the average garden centre or nursery. In the process we gained National Collection status for the Callistemon and I became slightly obsessive about tropical Hibiscus.
In 2010 Richard, from Fibrex Nurseries and me got married and The Old Walled Garden moved to Warwickshire, leaving behind its walls and settling onto the site of Fibrex, where I still continue to collect and grow the more unusual shrubs and climbers, including the Callistemon and Hibiscus.
For our many customers who visit the nursery, old and new, firstly there is no longer a walled garden. This has proved more of a challenge than I originally thought it would and it is taking a long time for the plants and me to settle in. However, we think we have finally got it worked out! As of 2012 during the summer the Hibiscus will have their very own display house for the public to look round, having previously been jealously guarded in one of my glasshouses. The Bottlebrush collection will be displayed in a more comprehensive fashion with a dedicated area set aside for them too. Not forgetting all of the other unusual plants I have become known for growing. For my old regulars who manage to find me on the edge of the Cotswolds, you not only have my collections to browse through, you also have the National Pelargonium Collection, the National Hedera Collection, the largest commercial collection of ferns in Britain and a fabulous collection of named tuberous begonias. The wow factor as you walk from one glasshouse of goodies to another is truly mouth-watering.
And of course, for those who can't make it to the nursery, there is always our mail order service which is efficient and a cost effective way of getting your hands on some really wonderful plants.
Coach parties, gardening clubs and societies are welcome and for those that wish it, a tour of the nursery can be given. This includes tea, coffee and home-made cakes. Please contact the office for details.
2012 looks set to be a great year for the two nurseries, we hope you will come and share it with us.
